On Friday Rajya Sabha members once more lifted the demand for increasing their salaries and questioned the administrations stillness on the suggestions of a group that has optional salary rise for the members of parliament. On several occasions, the MPs have conveyed that their salary should be more than that of the Cabinet Secretary.
Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav has also further conveyed that, MPs' salary is inferior of all. Our salary is smaller than MLAs of Delhi administration, half of what a Maharashtra MLA gets, and a third of that of Telangana MLAs. He has also further conveyed that, we are asked to lessen spending. Should we turn people away? We are spending from our own savings.
Yadav has also further conveyed that, augment our salary and make it more than Cabinet Secretary's. Congress leader Anand Sharma supported the Samajwadi Party leader. He also has further conveyed that, the administration is quiet on the suggestions. Either we accept that we are not people's legislature, we need to be capitalist, feudal lords, or businessmen. If we are people's legislature, there should not be this hypocrisy that the salary of MPs is not increased but other people get rise.
Several other associates also supporting the demand. The salary of the Cabinet Secretary is Rs 2,50,000 a month as suggested by the 7th Pay Commission. A joint committee of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha has prepared an account suggesting MPs' salary to be increased from the present Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000 and secretarial assistance plus office allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.
The suggestions have not been made communal. The panel, headed by BJP leader Yogi Adityanath, also suggested around 75 per cent increase in pensions and an automatic mechanism for salary hike for MPs. On Monday an allocation of MPs had met Prime Minister Narenda Modi to request a pay hike and an increase in the MP's allowance to enlarge their constituencies.
