Rajya Sabha Election : Tamil Nadu elected Six nominees…


Tamil Nadu : Six candidates belonging to Dravidian majors, AIADMK and DMK, were on Friday elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha as the process to fill the vacancies created by retiring members ended. With four  members, the AIADMK’s strength in the Upper House will rise to 12 from the existing 11, while the DMK will have 4 members.

AIADMK floor leader in Rajya Sabha A. Navaneethakrishnan, former minister R. Vaithilingam, former Union minister S.R. Balasubramanian and A. Vijayakumar of the AIADMK lawyers’ wing and DMK’s T.K.S. Elangovan and R.S. Bharathi were announced elected unopposed as withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 pm on Friday.  Today was the last date of withdrawal of nominations. 

With the election of four MPs, the strength of ruling AIADMK will go up to 12 from the present 11 in Rajya Sabha. There will be no change in the number of DMK MPs which will continue to be four. The terms of AIADMK's Navaneethakrishnan, A W Rabi Bernard and P H Paul Manoj Pandian and DMK's K P Ramalingam and S Thangavelu and former Union Minister and Congress leader E M Sudarsana Natchiappan, will end in June. The scrutiny of nominations was held on Wednesday and papers of seven independents were found to be invalid.
