Rajasthan: Congress to stand up for cows holding BJP responsible for deaths at gaushalas

Jaipur: What until now was a pet political issue of the BJP has now appealed the Congress. The opposition party has decided to talk of protecting cows to hit the ruling BJP, which has been including the issue in its election manifestos. In the aftermath of thousands of cows having died at Hingonia allegedly due to government apathy in past two years, the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) has decided to make it an issue to corner BJP during the state assembly session commencing from September 1.

The session, though, is unlikely to last even a week, as it has been called primarily to ratify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) amendment bill passed by the parliament. The CLP met at the Congress headquarters in the city on Tuesday under AICC general secretary in-charge of Rajasthan, Gurudas Kamat. Party state president Sachin Pilot, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, leader of opposition Rameshwar Dudi, deputy leader of opposition Ramesh Meena and CLP whip Govind Singh Dotasra, among others, were present.

"At a time when the entire nation is shocked at the deaths of thousands of cows at Hingonia, the chief minister of the state has not bothered to even visit it. We will hold the government accountable in the assembly for the untimely death of cows in all gaushalas of the state," leader of opposition Dudi said after the meeting. He added corruption was the main reason why the cows have been dying in such large numbers at the state gaushalas.

The issue was raised at the Pradesh Congress Committee's (PCC) executive and office-bearers' meeting too that followed the CLP meeting. Addressing the party men, former chief minister Gehlot said, "BJP has been doing politics over the cows all this while but unfortunately after coming to power it has left the cows to die. Gai aur Gareeb ki ladai ladne ke liye hum sabko kaam karna hai (we all have to work to fight for the cow and the poor)."

PCC chief Pilot too hit out at the BJP while raising the issue of cow deaths in his address at the party executive meeting. "Cows dying in thousands is a failure of the BJP government. People are pained to see the plight of cows under BJP rule," Pilot said.
