Jaipur: An investigation into the death of a couple in a road accident in Sriganganagar on August 24 has revealed the incident to be a gruesome case of honour killing. Following the investigation, the police arrested the parents and uncle for conspiring to kill their 17-year-old daughter and her boyfriend.
According to police, Neeru (17) was a resident of 6 Mld village near Ghadsana area of the city. She fell in love with Jagdish Meghwal (30), a doctor and living in the same locality. "Neeru's parents had often reprimanded the girl for her relation with Jagdish. They had also spotted them roaming around in the city together on several occasions," police said. Neeru and her father, Devendra Singh, had heated arguments over her relationship with Jagdish. "Her mother, Veerpal Kaur, had told her daughter that her acts were a disgrace to the entire family. It was known that Neeru's parents disapproved of her relationship," police said.
On August 24, the girl told her parents that she was going to the college to cast her vote in the college student union polls. "She took a bus from near her house, and got off at a bus stop near Nai Mandi outside Kanya Mahavidhyala in the morning. Jagdish was waiting for her at the bus stop," police said. At 12.30pm, both Jagdish and Neeru headed towards Bikaner road on a bike.
"Somebody had informed Devendra Singh and Veerpal about their daugther's movement in the area. In anger, Devendra Singh rang up his brother-in-law Gurmeet Singh to catch the duo. Gurmeet works at a brick factory in the same area," police said. Gurmeet then reached the Bikaner road on his tractor and waited for the duo at a secluded stretch of the highway.
"When he saw Jagdish and Neeru coming on the bike, Gurmeet rammed his speeding tractor into their vehicle. Jagdish was tossed up in the air and fell on the road where he died on the spot. Neeru was rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. After the killing, Singh fled from the spot," police said. According to district police SP Rahul Katakey, the police launched a search operation for the unidentified tractor driver.
On Saturday, they arrested Gurmeet and found that he was the uncle of Neeru, and the entire conspiracy unraveled. "After nabbing Gurmeet and questioning him, it became clear that it was a case of honour killing, so we arrested Neeru's mother and father. A case has been registered against them for murder," he added.
