Ahemdabad: A special court on Monday will hand out the sentences to the 24 accused in the Gulbarg housing society massacre on June 17. The court which had heard arguments on the sentencing at length will now deliver the quantum of the sentence on June 17. The prosecution has sought at least life imprisonment for those found guilty of murder.
On June 10, the special investigation team (SIT) court had fixed Monday as the next day of hearing after both sides concluded the arguments on quantum of punishment.
The court had convicted 24 persons and acquitted 36 in connection with the Gulbarg massacre case in which 69 persons were killed including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. The special court while delivering its verdict convicted 11 out of the 24 persons for murder. The verdict came 14 years after a mob of nearly 20,000 attacked the Gulbarg society comprising 29 bungalows and 10 apartments.
The Gulbarg case is one of the nine post-Godhra riot cases in Gujarat probed by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT. The Supreme Court had appointed a Special Investigating Team to probe all the nine cases.
