Amritsar: A special CBI court in Amritsar has jailed three cops for gross criminal misconduct which they carried out 23 years ago: tattooing foreheads of four women with the word 'jeb katri' (Pickpocket).
On December 1993, Punjab police drew widespread condemnation when it was reported that they had tattooed the word on the forehead of four women for allegedly stealing a purse. The famous incident of the women revealing the word by lifting their dupatta inside the court inspired the Human Rights Commission to take serious note of the incidence.
The backlash for the action followed after the victims filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1994. The victims demanded arrangement of plastic surgery, compensation for the inhuman act and punishment for the guilty cops. The Special CBI judge Baljinder Singh awarded three years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to the accused policemen.
