On Thursday, Inaugurating the Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (IILDS) at Sonarpur in the southern fringes of Kolkata, President Pranab Mukherjee on expressed concern that instead of providing health care as a service, certain institutions are treating it only as a business.
“One thing that is absent in suppliers of social insurance is the state of mind of giving administration — to serve the debilitated and to serve the penniless with a human touch,” Mr. Mukherjee said at the occasion.
He additionally proposed that administrations to a patient should be furnished with a grinning face as “a grinning face can cure half of the sickness”.
While the President underlined the need for a human touch, he also asked relatives of patients to desist from hooliganism, disruption and violence, in case patients are not cured in spite of the doctors’ best efforts. Mr. Mukherjee praised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for taking action when complaints arose over the commercialisation of healthcare.
