Pargat Singh resigns from Akali Dal

New Delhi: Former hockey captain-turned- politician Pargat Singh today resigned from Shiromani Akali Dal, accusing party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal of "betraying" the trust of people of Punjab.

He submitted his resignation to party president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal. Singh – who represents the Jalandhar Cantonment – had recently launched a new political forum, with Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bains brothers, called Awaaz-e-Punjab.

The former sportsperson was suspended from the Akali Dal in July this year. Subsequently, Singh described the suspension as “good riddance”. The former Indian hockey captain, Pargat had refused to become chief parliamentary secretary in April, hours before the swearing-in ceremony, leaving the chief minister red-faced.

The SAD had attempted to placate Pargat by offering him the CPS post that he refused to accept till the issues of his constituencies were not resolved.
