Pakistan releases four Indian detainee, hands them over to New Delhi


Four Indian detainees were without set by Pakistan and were given over to the Indian government on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The detainees, recognized as Suraj Ram, Sohan Lal, Mohammad Maqbool Lone and Abdul Majid were released in Pakistan and have crossed over to India today.

Days after prime MInister Narendra Modi’s casual meeting with his Pakistan partner Nawaz Sharif, India on June 12 discharged no less than 11 common detainees in what authorities depicted as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

Pakistan had looked for the arrival of these detainees as they had all served their sentence. This is the first such signal from Indian authorities since affirmed Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav was serveddeath sentence by a Pakistan military court in April this year.

Prior in March, India discharged no less than 39 Pakistani detainees including 18 fishermen, after Pakistan affirmed their nationality.

Reporting their release, the External Affairs Ministry said they are being repatriated to Pakistan by means of Attari/Wagah check post.
