London: Jamaica’s Omar McLeod on Monday wins the world 110 metres hurdles title in London. Record holder Aries Merritt’s dream of winning a medal two years following a kidney transplant as the American 2012 Olympic champion ended fifth at the World Athletics Championships.

My Khel Ratna recommendation will inspire others, says Devendra Jhajaria

23-yr-old McLeod led from beginning to end to win the title in 13.04 seconds. McLeod provided Jamaica following both superstar Usain Bolt and women’s double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson failed to bring home gold in the 100m.

McLeod further added that, I actually wanted to come out here and keep the Jamaican flag high. This one is special, honestly. There was much pressure coming in but I channeled it absolutely. McLeod commanded the race leaving the others to fight it out for the minor medals with Merritt in dispute until the last obstacle.

Though he weakened and Dergey Shubenkov, who as a Russian was running as an Authorized Neutral Athlete due to the nation’s boycott over an enormous doping embarrassment, burst through to bring second with 2016 European silver medallist Baji edging Frenchman Garfield Darien for the third spot on the platform. “I’m so baffled,” said Shubenkov.

“I battled throughout the last couple of obstacles, yet I was driving for the main half so that is the disappointment. “The Jamaican is just too fast. I’m recently glad to be contending at a world champs and get a world award. A year ago was a fiasco and not as a result of the Russian boycott (on contending at the Olympics) so I’m happy to be back winning a world medal.”
