New Delhi. RBI has issued a notice to banks asking them to stop imposing Non Maintenance Charge in case minimum balance reaches to zero. Central Bank has issued notice to all the banks in this regard. This rule was made effective last year only but some banks are still charging from account holders.
Now according to the issued notice if any bank charges on saving bank a/c and consequently the account balance go in negative, customer can file a complaint against it. This problem mostly occurs in Salary A/c. Here, the hiring company opens a Salary A/c but when the job changes, that bank account changes to savings account. After that, bank imposes the rule of Minimum Balance. As a result, they charge non maintenance charges and balance goes in negative.
RBI changed the guidelines in 2014 in this regard and in April 2015, this instruction was bought into action. RBI told the banks not to take advantage of the customer’s problem and to inform the customer before charging the Maintenance Charge.
