Nirbhaya gang-rape case: Convict Vinay Sharma attempts suicide in Tihar jail


New Delhi: On Wednesday Vinay Sharma, one of the four men verdicted to death for gang-rape, torture and killing of a young medical student in 2012 in what came to be known as the Nirbhaya case, supposedly tried to hang himself with a towel at the high security Tihar jail.

Sharma, who was a gym trainer, purportedly took pills previous to trying to hang himself. He is in hospital and out of danger. Previous year, he had commanded more security in jail asserting that he had been beaten up by other inmates.

Another convict Ram Singh, the driver of the bus in which the woman was beaten, was establish hanging in Tihar jail in March 2013. Six men were originating culpable of raping and torturing the 23-year-old physiotherapist, who was on her way home following watching a movie on a winter evening.

She died in hospital 13 days afterward. As street protests raged through a shocked country, the administration commenced major changes to laws on crimes next to women. Vinay Sharma and three others have petition alongside their death sentence in the Supreme Court.

The youngest of the rapists, who was short of 18 when he was detained, was released from an alteration home previous year following three years in probation, amid protests by hundreds counting the woman’s parents.
