Nearly 10 killed as Goa bridge crumpled

PANAJI: About two people killed and many others went missing after a bridge linking Sanvordem and Curchorem villages in South Goa district of Goa collapsed on Thursday.

Several people were standing on the bridge to evacuate the youth who bounded into the river to attempt suicide.

In the last four years, the Portuguese-era bridge across the river Sanvordem, a tributary of river Zuari, was finished for traffic.

When people tried to rescue the youth, about 50 people were watching their attempts from the bridge fell down into the water after the collapse of bridge.

The police revealed that around 20 people got saved. Other 14 people were evacuated and they were rushed to the nearby hospitals to undergo treatment.

“More people are feared to have been trapped under the collapsed portion of the bridge,” a police officer stated.

Jumpers from the Indian Navy and the Drishti Lifeguard Services, a private office which gives lifeguards to the state’s shorelines, were brought in for the save operation.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told correspondents that all concerned organizations have been squeezed without hesitation.

“A gigantic hunt and protect operation is being done. Regardless we don’t have correct number of individuals who could be in the water,” he said.

A Navy representative said nine Navy jumpers with Geminis pontoons have been hurried to Curchorem. The protect operation is relied upon to proceed as the night progressed.

PWD serve Sudin Dhavalikar who raced to the site said the extension was shut for use throughout the previous four years.

“Individuals who were enthusiastic about seeing the protect operation for an adolescent who had hopped into the stream to submit suicide expelled the blockades on the scaffold,” he said.

In the interim, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he addressed Parrikar taking after the extension crumple reports.

“Addressed Goa CM … as to extension fall on Sanvordem stream. Pursuit and protect operations have been heightened,” Singh tweeted.
