Telangana: The Telangana administration has declared ‘murrel’ as the State fish. This Murrel fish is extensively known as Korramatta or Korrameenu in Telugu, one of the largest producing species crossways the state. ‘Murrel’ channa striatus is the seventh State sign discovered by the management for dissimilar species. The previous icons were: State bird – Pala Pitta (Indian Roller or Blue Jay); flower – Tangedu (Tanner’s Cassia); fruit – Mango; tree – Jammi chettu (Prosopis Cineraria); sport – Kabaddi and animal – Jinka (deer).
On Wednesday the administration also issued guidelines to regulate exotic fish culture like Tilapia so as to preserve the indigenous aquatic diversity in the water bodies of Telangana. The principle was suggested by an expert committee on animal and fish biodiversity. They also has further conveyed that, there were 109 fish species established in rivers, canals and water bodies in the State and many of them were almost threatened and vulnerable. Consequently, it was decided to permit Tilapia fish nurseries only if they were previously registered with the Fisheries Department.
