Mumbai: Two corporators of MNS held for engineer insult

Mumbai: Accused of humiliating a BMC official, two MNS corporators, Sandeep Deshpande and Santosh Dhuri, surrendered before the police on Saturday evening. "The two corporators have been arrested," Pramajit Dahiya, zonal deputy police commissioner, said. Sanjay Darde, chief engineer (roads), BMC, had filed an FIR against the two on Thursday.

The arrested corporators were sent to the central lock-up of the Mahim police station. They are to be produced before a special holiday court on Sunday. On Wednesday, Deshpande and Dhuri, along with their supporters, shouted slogans outside Darde's office in Worli for not addressing the pothole problem in Dadar.

They asked Darde to accompany them to an affected spot and forced him to pose with a poster that said he was responsible for the potholes found there. After the incident, Darade had submitted a complaint application, but no FIR was registered immediately.

On Thursday, a large number of civic engineers protested against the incident and stopped work at the BMC office to demand action in light of the the insult.Office-bearers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers Union along with engineers met municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and submitted a resignation letter signed by more than 1,000 engineers and demanded dismissal of the two corporators. While Mehta did not accept their resignation, he assured them of action and took up the issue with the city police chief, D D Padsalgikar.

This led to the registration of an FIR. The Shivaji Park police station booked the corporators under Section 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. Deshpande had earlier said that they asked Darde to pose for a photograph with a poster to inform people that he was responsible for the potholes and that their action was in the public interest.
