In a major breakthrough against the organized network of doctors that facilities sex determination test, state unit of PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) cell arrested 64-year-old Dr Jayantilal Patel along with middleman Nirav Patel (23) from Mehsana district of Gujarat.
According to Raguveer Singh, additional SP, both the accused were arrested in a decoy operation from a private medical hospital in Gujarat's Mehsana district on Monday.
"The middleman took a woman from Barmer to Mehsaha via Abu Road for illegal sex determination test. Dr Patel charged Rs 20,000 to conduct the test. Dr Patel violated norms and did not ask the pregnant woman to fill the requisite information in the form," police said. Soon after, the police busted the racket, there was huge crowd of people and senior officials of Meshana police also arrived at the spot.
The PCPNDT showed the documents, audio and video recording of the act and took the accused doctor to Rajasthan. Preliminary information revealed that middleman Nirav Patel used to pay Rs 15,000 to doctors keeping Rs 5,000 for himself. "The middleman was earning close to Rs 1 lakh every month by facilitating sex determination tests," police said.
The duo has been produced before a local court in Sirohi which sent them to police custody on Tuesday. According to police, Monday's arrest was the fifth decoy operation conducted out of the state under PCPNDT's drive. State's PCPNDT unit has launched a massive campaign against private clinics and hospitals that are found involved in such activities.
