Mercury passes in front of the Sun

New Delhi: This year’s rare and fascinating astronomical event is going to occur. The planet Mercury crossing in front of the Sun, will be visible in India today from 4.43 pm till sunset at 7.01 pm in Delhi. This event can be seen from the telescope in many parts of the world including the United States.

According to NASA scientists, the planet passes between Earth and the sun only about 13 times a century. They say its last trek was in 2006 and the next one won't happen again until November 2019.

It will be too small to see without the use of a telescope or high-powered binoculars; however, it is extremely important to use specialized solar filters for safe viewing for those trying to witness the event first hand.

Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the one closest to the Sun. It takes 88 earth days to orbit around the Sun.
