Major fire in Army ammunition depot, 17 killed including 2 officers

Nagapur: A major fire in Central Ammunition Depot in Maharashtra’s Pulgaon killed 17 and injured 19 on Tuesday. The fire broke out in the wee hours of morning on Tuesday at the Ammunition Depot which is about 110 km from Nagpur.

Two officers and 15 Defence Security Corps (DSC) soldiers were killed in the massive fire. Around 1,000 people from a nearby village have been evacuated.

"The main fire at one of the sheds has been extinguished. The situation is being stabilised. Secondary fire and explosions cannot be ruled out now," the Army officer added.

Firefighters have controlled the massive blaze, but smaller fires and repeated explosions remain a concern. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will visit Pulgaon later today.
