Maharashtra government target of planting 50 crore trees in state crossed


Mumbai: Maharashtra, which embarked on its ambitious. The government also announced its plan to plant 50 crore saplings in the next three years. The drive was launched in the presence of state Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister of State for Environment Prakash Jawdekar, Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantwar and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. 

At the event, the forest minister declared that the state government has finalized about 65,674 sites and created a bank of over 5.32 crores saplings for distribution.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted appreciating the initiative. "Excellent initiative by the Maharashtra Government, of planting 2 crore trees in one day. Urge everyone in Maharashtra to support and join," his tweet read.  Superstar Amitabh Bachchan too tweeted and appealed people to support the noble cause. 

Meanwhile the event to launch the plantation drive also became an opportunity for the BJP and Shivsena to bury the hatchet. After the recent war of words, CM Fadnavis and Shivsena President Uddhav Thackeray shared the stage on the occasion. "Uddhav has planted a sapling, I have watered it. I hope that it will send across a right message. Our friendship too will grow like a huge tree in the future," said Fadnavis.
