MUMBAI: The Pune Cops have lodged a criminal case against Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and JNU student Chief Umar Khalid for making offensive speeches that triggered caste conflicts.
A case has been filed against the accused for provoking communal discord on December 31 with their dialogues at an Elgaar Parishad situated at Pune’s Shaniwarwada. The conflicts had extended in various areas of Maharashtra.
They were charged under sections 153A, 505 and 117 of the IPC. Pune Cops affirmed that the two would not be detained straight away but would be called in for interrogation. Prakash Ambedkar affirmed, he believed that Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis would take strict step against Sambhaji Bhide and Milind Ekbote.
“On Friday, we convene with the CM and he has promised us that the cops would detain both Bhide and Ekbote quickly. He also pledged us that the judicial commission that is probing the Monday aggression would have civil and criminal control,” Ambedkar added.
He asserted that the judicial commission would be made soon. Prakash Ambedkar also stated that Fadnavis had concurred to their needs that the Mumbai cops should not carry investigations to detain Dalit youth who were allegedly indulged in violence at the time of Wednesday’s shutdown.
