Kanpur: Samajwadi Party leader shot dead


Mumbai: A local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Billhaur area of the district on Monday morning. Ram Singh Yadav, a native of Subhanpur under the limits of Billhaur police station was shot dead while he was heading towards a tea-kiosk on a two-wheeler at Nagar Palika crossing. Yadav's daughter is married to son of block pramukh of Kannauj, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, around three men, who shot Yadav escaped on their motorcycles, police said further. Yadav, who suffered several bullet injuries, died on the spot.

Though the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, police believe it could be fallout of some political rivalry. "On the complaint made by Yadav's family, we have registered a case against five men. All of them are absconding. Efforts are on to nab them," said SSP Shalabh Mathur.

The murder has triggered tension in the area with supporters of Ram Singh, demanding the arrest of those behind his murder.
