Jayalalithaa announces to build Amma gymnasiums, Amma parks to benefit rural youth


Chennai: The latest in a series of initiatives under brand 'Amma', Tamil Nadu government will set up 500 'Amma Gyms' for youth and develop as many 'Amma Parks' for the public in rural areas. In the state Assembly she said that each gymnasium will cost around Rs 10 lakh, bringing the entire project’s cost to around Rs 50 crore, a news agency reported. There will also be 500 parks in rural areas, which will cost around Rs 100 crore in total.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader also announced other measures including building 23 short-stay homes for family members of long-term patients at government hospitals, and switching to LED lighting for street lamps. More toilets and road infrastructure development was also on the cards, she said, besides sanctioning bank loans worth Rs 6,000 crore for women self-help groups.

This is reportedly the first set of measures announced under the Amma brand after the AIADMK won the state election in May. Amma canteens, drinking water, cement, salt, and pharmacies are some of the other such initiatives that started under Jayalalithaa’s regime.
