Investigation ordered into racism against Manipur girl at Delhi airport

The probe has been ordered by the bureau of immigration into a Manipur girl as the immigration official had made the racial remarks against her while she were travelling to Seoul from Delhi airport on Saturday.

The person who made the remarks is a sub-inspector level officer, says immigration officials.  The inquiry will be conducted by the Bureau of Immigration, which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The issue was such that, “Manipur girl, Khangembam wrote on her facebook wall that when she went to the immigration desk at IGI at around 9 pm on Saturday, an official looked at her passport and said, 'Indian toh nahi lagti ho.”

Further, he asked her “How many states were there in the country, in order to know her Indianness.”

"We are examining the case. We have asked for a full report. There have been previous cases of harassment. We will take action if there was a harassment," Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said.

Moreover, after knowing about the matter, Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj said she would take up the matter with Home Minister, Rajnath Singh.

"Monika Khangembam – I am sorry to know this. Immigration is not with me. I will speak to my senior colleague Shri @rajnathsingh ji to sensitise Immigration officials at the airport," Swaraj tweeted.
