Indian Bowler Ashwin achieved Third, Ajinkya Rahane Eighth in ICC Test Rankings


Dubai: Bowler R-Ashwin has secured third position among the top 10 bowlers while Ajinkya Rahane has achieved 8th position in the batsmen’s list of ICC Test rankings on Wedesday.  

In the top rankings, South Africa’s bowler Dale Steyn  got the 1st position after giving a match-winning performance in the Centurion Test over New Zealand that helped him to score 204 runs.

In the second innings, Steyn took five wickets for 33 runs. He finished with match figures of eight for 99 to regain the top slot, the ICC said in a statement.

In Feb 2014, the 33yr old was considered as the Number 1 while in December 2015 Steyn suffered shoulder injury during a Durban test. While, Ashwin took advantage of his absence and showcased outstanding performance in the match and considered as the top bowler.

Bowler Steyn has jumped Ashwin and top-positioned England pace bowler James Anderson to take the top space, which he initially involved mutually with resigned Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralidaran in April 2008.

Steyn has now been number-one for a record 263 Tests with Muralidaran coming next in the rundown at 214 weeks. As far as days, Steyn has burned through 2,320 days at the top, the most by any bowler since World War II.

In the rankings for Test Batsmen, South Africa commander Faf du Plessis' unbeaten century in the principal innings contributed in him climbing the stepping stool.

Du Plessis scored 112 not out and six in his two innings and has climbed nine spots from 33rd to 24th rank.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, who was pronounced player of the match for his thumps of 82 and 50 and additionally six rejections behind the wickets, have seen him climb 18 spaces to 32nd rank.

In the mean time, the 1-0 arrangement win has pushed South Africa up two spots to fifth in the Team Rankings, while New Zealand have slipped two spots to seventh. India stand second in the rundown behind Pakistan.
