Johannesburg: Uncapped opening batsman Jeet Raval has been named in New Zealand's test squad for their tour of southern Africa in August, New Zealand Cricket said on Friday. The Gujarat-born Raval’s selection for the tour is a positive move by the New Zealand board. With an average of 43.85 in First-class cricket, Raval’s place in the side has been backed by his tremendous run of form. The left-handed batsman’s elegant stroke-play has probably helped him in finding a place in the team heading for Africa in July.
The inclusion of Raval has threatened the opening spot of Martin Guptill and Tom Latham, who have not been at their best against the new ball in the five-day format.
The Kane Williamson-led side will fly to Zimbabwe for a two-Test series starting on July 29 before visiting South Africa for another two-match series beginning on August 19.
The New Zealand squad is as follows
Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Jeet Raval, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson (captain).
