At the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics 2016, the men's hockey team crashed 3-1 against a dominant Belgium while the women could not crack pass the group stages.

India went into the Olympics as fifth in the FIH rankings under coach Roelant Oltman, but after registering only two wins, two losses, one draw and a loss against Belgium, the tally crumbled and India stayed behind Belgium who is currently ranked sixth. An upset was also seen in the Test cricket rankings where Pakistan climbed to the top spot after India had a draw against West Indies.
