Government to come up with printing plastic notes soon

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been approved to lead handle trials for printing plastic Rs 10 denomination notes which will have a more extended life expectancy, Parliament was informed on Friday.

“Endorsement for acquisition of plastic substrate and printing of bank notes of Rs 10 denomination on plastic banknote substrates has been passed on to the RBI,” Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal told the Lok Sabha.

Substrate means the hidden substance or layer on which cash is printed.

The minister said the legislature had chosen to direct handle trials at five areas of the nation with plastic banknotes, which are relied upon to last longer than cotton substrate-based banknotes.
