Google to roll out Android 7.1 beta very soon

Google is already on to the next level with Android 7.1, first major update to Nougat whereas Android Nougat used by very small number of users. Android 7.1 revealed with the launch of Pixel phones last week.

Dave Burke, Android engineering VP, has posted a blog saying the developer preview of Android 7.1 will start rolling out to some Nexus phones and Pixel C by the end of this month.

Google will open the developer preview for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, and Pixel C tablet. The final version will be available to “supported Android One devices” in addition to above listed. The company plans to roll out the final version of Android 7.1.X by early December.

Google’s latest phones, Pixel and Pixel XL, will come with Android 7.1 out of the box. The Android 7.1 update, however, will not be exactly the same for other devices. The Pixel phones have some additional features that are only limited to the two phones like Google Assistant, Pixel Launcher, Pixel Camera, and 24/7 customer support.

The app shortcuts API will allow developers to add shortcuts for up to five features in their apps. The supported app will then show this option from the home screen, yes, something similar to Apple’s 3D Touch feature.

The Android 7.1 update will also add circular app icons support, a move to make Pixel and Android Launcher as similar in looks as possible.

Another feature that will come with the Android 7.1 developer preview is image keyboard support, which will add “the types of content that users can enter from their keyboards, letting them express themselves through custom stickers, animated gifs, and more. Apps can tell the keyboard what types of content they accept, and keyboards can deliver all of the images and other content that they offer to the user”.
