Google doodle celebrates Munshi Premchand’s Birth anniversary

Mumbai: Today's Google doodle celebrates 136th birth anniversary of one of the greatest short story writers, Munshi Premchand. Premchand, who has written many short stories, essays and novels in his lifetime, was born on July 31, 1880 in Lamhi, Uttar Pradesh.

His last and most famous novel, Godaan (1936), inspired today's doodle, which shows Premchand (sometimes referred to as "Upanyas Samrat," or, "emperor among novelists") bringing his signature working-class characters to life.

On what would have been his 136th birthday, the illustration pays tribute to the multitude of important stories he told. Premchand in his writings narrated stories of India, mostly before independence. The stories draw pictures of communal and class divide during those times, however his stories are very much relevant in present times as well.

Premchand's last published story was Cricket Match, which appeared in Zamana in 1938 , after his death.
