To get free LPG connection, Aadhaar number compulsory for women in BPL households


An Aadhaar card is an absolute necessity for woman living in Below Poverty Line (BPL) households to avail of free cooking gas (LPG) association under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the government said on Wednesday.

The government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana a year ago to give free LPG connections with 5 crore poor woman in three years.

“Individual beneficiary desirous of profiting the advantage under the plan [PMUY] is thus required to furnish proof of ownership of Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar validation,” said a paper notice issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The women under BPL who don’t have Aadhaar number have been approached to apply for it by May 31. Once enlisted for Aadhaar, the recipient can apply for nothing LPG association by giving the enrolment ID slip or a copy of such a demand.

Such application should be joined by one of the administration recognizable proof archives like bank passbook with photo, voter ID, ration card, permanent account number (PAN), driving license, kisan photograph passbook or a identity having a photograph issued by a gazetted officer on an official letterhead, the notice said.

The Ministry has asked state-possessed fuel retailing firms to encourage enrolment of recipients for biometric identification proof number.

In October last, the administration made Aadhaar obligatory for profiting of cooking gas (LPG) appropriation. The administration now gives 12 cylinders of 14.2 kg each at financed rates per family unit in a year.
