DYSP’S Suicide case: CID team visit suicide spot, Probe

Belagavi: The probe into the alleged suicide of Chikkamagaluru DySP Kallappa Basappa Handibag was handed over to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday. The agency will also look into the kidnap case in which the cop was an accused.

The team including Sonia Narang and Belagavi district SP BR Ravikanthe Gowda inspected the room where Kallappa committed suicide. She arrived at Muragod around 10am and spent more than five hours before leaving for Bengaluru in the afternoon. Local police were not allowed to be present during the inspection. CID sleuths allowed family members of the officer to be around.

The investigators are trying to establish if there was negligence on the part of SP Santosh Babu in handling the sensitive case. A police officer said the CID team may have recovered material evidence from the spot. The post mortem report may be submitted in the next two or three days.

Sonia Narang said the investigation is in the initial stage and details will be provided once the investigation reaches its logical conclusion. Kallappa Handibag, who came under the scanner of kidnapping of Tejas Gowda at Chikkamagaluru, hanged himself at his wife Vidya's grandmother's house at Muragod village on Tuesday. He was immediately brought to KLE hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
