On Tuesday the Odisha Congress introduce ‘Kandhamal Adhikar Yatra’ from Gumudumaha to protest next to inaction of the administration in the killing of five innocents of this village in police firing through an anti-Maoist action on July 8. This five-day-long Yatra would cross through 11 revenue blocks in Kandhamal district and culminate at Baliguda on August 13. Several superior Congress leaders, counting State PCC president Prasad Harichandan, AICC secretary Bhakta Charan Das, past MP Pradeep Majhi, MLA Krishna Sagadia, took part in the Yatra.
Mr Majhi has also further conveyed that, through this Yatra, we want to press upon the State administration that such incidents should not recur anywhere in Odisha. Lack of any authorized action next to the policemen involved even following one month was also criticised by the party. The Congress is also protesting alongside inadequate compensation to the family associates of the victims. It is supposed that the offended have not yet been remunerated by the administration. The Kandhamal Adhikar Yatra has been commenced to create mass consciousness towards these matters. The Congress is demanding enquiry into the occurrence by a sitting judge of the Odisha High Court. On Tuesday morning more than 200 Congress activists, counting the leaders, approached Gumudumaha. They paid reverence to the five deceased souls at the memorial builded in their memory at the spot of the shoot-out on July 8 night.
Then they met the wounded as well as family associates of the departed at Gumudumaha, where a small community gathering was also held. From there, with photographs of five dead in hand, the Congress activists commenced their Yatra and arrived at Kurtamgarh, where a rally and community assembly was held to highlight the two matters taken up by the party. By evening, the Yatra approached Tumudibandh. Ruling BJD, though, termed this Yatra a political move. talking to media, BJD representatives Rabi Narayan Nanda conveyed that, it was unlucky that the Congress is doing politics. According to him the State SIT is examining the occurrence and strong action would be started next to anyone established guilty.
