Sriganganagar: Two suspicious persons carrying bags on their back were spotted by locals near the Gang canal's Shivpur-head close to international border in Sriganganagar district late Sunday night. The duo was swimming in the canal towards Punjab but escaped into nearby agricultural fields when questioned by locals. The incident put the BSF and intelligence agencies, including the local police, on high alert.
Indian intelligence agencies were already getting inputs about terrorist attempts at entering the country from Pakistan border. The security agencies launched a search operation but could not trace the suspects.
The agencies doubt the two could be terrorists who entered from Pakistan border or smugglers from Punjab who came to collect a drug consignment from Sriganganagar. According to sources, some labourers deployed to cut trees near the Shivpur-head saw two persons swimming in the Gang canal.
The labourers raised an alarm at which both men came out of the canal and ran into the agricultural fields. Both were carrying backpacks. The labourers informed the nearby Hindumalkot police, which in turn informed the BSF and other security agencies.
BSF Raj Frontier DIG, Ravi Gandhi said search operations were launched and even footprints were checked but no proof of intrusion was found. The nearby villagers too denied seeing suspicious persons. Gandhi said there was possibility of the two being petty criminals who were running away after committing some crime. But it was difficult to say anything with certainty at present, he added.
