At least 13 people were originating dead under strange circumstances in Gopalganj in Bihar. Though, family members of the victims convey that they had consumed spurious liquor on Tuesday evening. The police and the management have ruled out illicit liquor angle.
The first incident happened on Tuesday afternoon after five people were admitted at the civil hospital complaining of uneasiness and vomiting. The incident took place in Harkhua Khajurbani locality in Gopalganj town.
After consuming the liquor, the locals started complaining of stomach pain and began vomiting. Soon they were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Few victims were also taken to private hospital in neighboring Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh for treatment. In the middle of the treatment five people died by late evening and overnight five more deaths took place raising the death toll to 13.
According to sources, Gopalganj DM Rahul Kumar too has denied the cause of death being spurious liquor. The probe in the issue is underway. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asserted there has been a drastic decrease in percentage of crimes in the previous two months following complete prohibition of alcohol was imposed in the state.
He has also further conveyed in the temple town of Gaya that, heinous crimes have come down by 15% in previous two months. Nitish Kumar had in April declared a complete ban on alcohol in the state with instantaneous effect, raising a debate on whether such bans actually help in solving crime and other issues in Bihar. The persons who have died in the hooch tragedy are Parmanand Mahto (54), Mantu Giri (34), Shashi Kant Mahto (24), Dinesh Mahto (40), Umesh Chauhan (34), Ramji Sharma (46), Manoj Sah (23). This is the first big incident of hooch tragedy deaths that have taken place in Bihar after prohibition was imposed in the state in April this year.
