Atleast 15 Kerala youths go missing in Middle- East, families suspect IS links


Kasaragod: The incident happened on Friday when atleast 15 youths from Kerala's Kasaragod and Palakkad districts had gone missing. They were travelling to the Middle East for religious studies.

According to reports, “the missing included five married couples, one of them with a two-year-old child. Out of 15, 11 hail from Padana and Trikaripur in the northernmost Kasaragod district of Kerala, while the remaining four are from Palakkad district”

The investigation is in process by the police officials as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered the probe into the matter, Kasaragod Parliamentarian P Karunakaran said.

“During Eid, the parents of two missing youths received 'Whatsapp' messages which stated, "We are not coming back. Here there is Divine Rule. You also should join us,” Kasaragod District Panchayat member VPP Mustafa said.

Mustafa claimed that, "We have joined IS to fight US for attacking Muslims”

"The Chief Minister has asked police to launch a probe into the matter urgently," Karunakaran said on Saturday.

The people who were missing mostly belong to Padna and Thrikaripur in the northernmost Kasaragod district of Kerala, while the others are from Palakkad.

“Among those missing was a couple, Dr Ijas and his dentist wife, who had left home saying were going to Lakshadweep,” Mustafa said.

“All those missing had middle class backgrounds, were aged under 30, were all highly qualified and showed keen interest in religious matters since the past two years,” Mustafa claimed.
