Aircel-Maxis case: CBI seeks green signal to prosecute 5 officers

National| The CBI told a Delhi court on Friday that in the Aircel-Maxis case, the Center has sanctioned prosecution of five people including serving and former bureaucrats. Former Union Minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram and his son Karti are also accused in this case.

The other members of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), which have been cleared against, include then Secretary Ashok Jha, then Additional Secretary Ashok Chawla and then Joint Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna. Apart from this, the then Director of the Ministry Deepak Kumar Singh and then Under Secretary Ram Saran are included.

Of these five, three are employed in various government departments while two have retired. This report was made before Special Judge OP Saini. Those who have extended interim stay on their arrest in the cases filed against Chidambaram and Karti in this regard by the CBI and ED, till February 1,

The agency had on November 16 last year said that similar approval has been obtained for P Chidambaram. There are 18 accused in the case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, present on behalf of the CBI, told the CBI Special Court that the ongoing investigation in the case is going to be completed. After this, Special Judge Saini fixed the next date of hearing on February 1.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and AM Singhvi, appearing for P Chidambaram and Karti, demanded extension of the exemption period from the arrest.

The court adjourned the hearing in the money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the basis of the CBI case till the next date. The special public prosecutor of the ED Nitesh Rana requested this in this context. The court had earlier asked the CBI to file a charge sheet without proper permission. The court asked, 'What was so hasty thing?'

Chidambaram and his son were named in the charge sheet filed by the CBI on July 19 in this case. The agency filed a supplementary charge sheet before the Special Judge, who had fixed July 31 for consideration of this.
