Pakistan banned the Indian channels in Pakistan, know why

Pakistani Chief Justice Shakib Nasir has said that the Pakistani Supreme Court will not allow Indian programs to be shown on Pakistani TV channels. He said that Indian serials is spoiling the culture of Pakistan.

Chief Justice Nasir made this comment on Wednesday after the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemara) appealed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the High Court's decision. The Pakistani High Court also ordered the ban on Indian serials on Pakistani TV channels.

Prohibition on foreign material

Pemra's lawyer Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri informed the three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice that before the order of the stay order was passed by the High Court, the foreign material was banned on the order of the court. According to the Dawn newspaper report, the chairman of the Authority Salim Baig said that 65 percent of the programs shown on the FilmaJia channel are foreigners. Their percentage is up to 80 percent. The Chief Justice said, "We will not allow Indian programs to be shown on Pakistani channels."

When the court was informed that Filmajia is an entertainment channel its not a news channel on which any kind of publicity can be shown. Contrary to Pema's lawyer's argument, it said that it is still spoiling our culture. Nissar found that Faisal Siddiqui, lawyer of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association, was not present in the court during the hearing. He said that without hearing him we cannot give decision on this. After this the hearing was adjourned for the first week of February.

The ban was also in 2016

Earlier in 2016, Pemara imposed a complete ban on broadcasting of Indian content on local television and FM radio channels. This decision was largely seen in some channels and entertainment industry in India as 'tit-for-tat' step after the same material and steps taken against the artists.

The Lahore High Court had lifted the ban imposed by Pemara because the federal government had no objection about the same. In October 2018, the apex court restored the ban on the broadcast of Indian content on local television channels. However, the Lahore High Court has kept the order separate.
