The Bharatiya Janata Party has started the exercise of enhancing its strength in the Rajya Sabha. In this order, Telugu Desam Party, weak in Andhra Pradesh, has been given a shock. Four of the six TDP MPs have been successful in bringing BJP into their fold. Due to the separation of two-thirds of the party's members, the party-changing law will not be applicable to them and Parliament membership will remain intact. Thus, in the Rajya Sabha, the BJP seems to be getting stronger. During the first tenure of the Modi government, Modi had to face difficulties due to lack of adequate majority in the Rajya Sabha on several important issues.
In the Rajya Sabha, if the BJP reaches closer to the majority, it will be easy for the party to pass several important laws. It is believed that next year the BJP will cross the majority figure with NDA allies. There are a total of 245 members in the Rajya Sabha. NDA now has 100 members. For the majority, NDA should support more than 123 MPs. Meaning, there is a shortage of 23 MPs. The Congress has only 48 seats in the Rajya Sabha, while the Trinamool Congress has 13 MPs. 13 of the Samajwadi Party, 5 of the Marxist Communist Party, 6 MPs of independents and others.
NDA currently has 100 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. Among them are 71 BJP, AIADMK 13, JDU 6, Akali Dal 3, Shiv Sena 3, Nominated 3 and RPI 1 MP. After joining the BJP of four TDP MPs, the number of members in the Rajya Sabha has increased to 75. Apart from this, three members from Bihar and Gujarat have to be elected. These seats are vacant after the victory of Ravi Shankar Prasad, Amit Shah and Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha elections. It is also decided to win the BJP. In such a situation, the number of BJP members will reach 78.
In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA will be seen reaching near the 123 figure of majority with 107 seats. It is believed that the BJP will get the support of five members of the Biju Janata Dal and two members of the YSR Congress for important legislation. At the same time, the government will be able to achieve the majority by getting some members of the party from the house by walking. By the way, in 2020, there will be a contest on 10 Rajya Sabha seats in UP, in which BJP can win most. Out of these 9 seats are still with the opposition parties, out of which six are from Samajwadi Party, 2 Bahujan Samaj Party and 1 Congress.
