Indian Politician, Socialist leader and Former Defence Minister in the Vajpayee Government, George Fernandes passed away today at the age of 88.
Mr. Fernandes was ill from a very long time and was suffering with Alzhiemer’s disease, he recently got Swine Flu which resulted in his death. He took his last breath today at 7.00 am in Delhi’s hospital.
9th Lok Sabha MP George Fernandes was the founder of the Samata Party. He was also a key member of the Janta Dal. He took charge of various ministry including Industry, Rail and defence in the Central Government.
Born on 3 June, 1930 in a Christian Family, Mr. Fernandes was a former Indian trade unionist, politician, journalist, agriculturist, and member of Rajya Sabha from Bihar.
His last stint as a parliamentarian was as a Rajya Sabha MP between August 2009 and July 2010.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over his demise.
“George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership. Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor and marginalised. Saddened by his passing away,” PM tweeted.
