After April 2020, there will be no sale and registration of Bharat Stage (BS) -4 vehicles in the country. The Supreme Court ordered this on Wednesday. The court reserved the decision on 27 August in this case. BS-4 is the standard of pollutant emissions. The Central Government had announced in 2016 that BS-5 standards will be implemented ahead of 2020 by BS-6 standards.
Sulfur is much lower compared to BS-4 in BS-6 fuel. It reduces the pollution. Vehicles with high BS standards spread less pollution. Government oil companies will invest Rs 28,000 crore in refineries for BS-6 fuel supply.
The government wanted the time till June 2020
The government wanted that the auto companies have time to sell the old stock till 30 June 2020. But, the Supreme Court's Amicus Curiae Aparajita Singh was against it. He also opposed the proposal to sell heavier vehicles without BS-6 standard till 30 September 2020.
