Aquatic Championship: Swimmer Sajan Prakash breaks national record in 200m butterfly


Ranchi: Olympian Sajan Prakash of Railway made a national record in men’s 200m butterfly en route on Sunday. He won the gold medal in 70th Senior National Aquatic Championships in Ranchi.

In 200m butterfly Prakash clocked 1:59.35 to win the gold.

Team mate Supriyo Mondal won the silver in 02:03.42 while Manoj Mitesh, representing Services, won bronze with a time of 02:07.04.

At the Hong Kong Open that was held in 2016, he scored 1:59.27 in 200m butterfly event.

On Sunday, Prakash’s performance helped him to reach to the finals and made national records.

In the 50m butterly en route in women’s category, Annie Jain of MP finished second in 00:35.39 while A V Jayveena of Tamil Nadu claimed bronze with a time of 00:35.40.

On Day 2, Monique Gandhi secured first position in 1500m freestyle with a time of 18:21.13 beating Shruti Mahalingam from Tamil Nadu who clocked 18:21.53.

In 4x100m relay in women's category, Yuga Barnale, Monique Gandhi, Trisha Karkhanis and Rayna Saldanha won the race. Maharashtra got the gold with a timing of 04:36.31. Karnataka won silver with 04:38.33 while Gujarat won bronze with 04:41.41.
