Andhra Pradesh: At Least 16 people lost their lives after a boat in the Krishna River overturned in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The incident occurred close to Vijaywada, 275 km from Hyderabad in the evening.
The boat was carrying 38 people during the incident. The accident took place when the boat left for Pavitra Sangamam at Ferry village close to Vijayawada from Bhavani Island, the cops stated. The local fishermen evacuated fifteen people from the spot.
Cops stated that the boat did not have authorization to run. Moreover, the evacuated people affirmed that they were not given life jackets too.
National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Relief Forces teams were deployed to rescue people.
“The boat was carrying 38 people and most of them were not given life jackets. It overturned near a curve as it reach to the Pavitra Sangamam point and several people were trapped underneath and were killed,” an Assistant Commissioner of Police stated.
Several travelers were believed to be members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district whereas few were from Nellore who were on a break to Vijayawada.
Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa reached to the spot to look at the situation. He even declared a recompense of Rs. 5 lakh each for the kins of those lost their lives.
CM Chandrababu Naidu, opposition leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy and other leaders articulated sorrow over the calamity.
Tourism Minister Bhuma Akhila Priya demanded an investigation into the tragedy and told her department officials to check out if the boat operator had obligatory permissions.
