Akbari Daal


Akbari Daal is a popular Mughlai recipe prepared with urad dal, fresh cream, beaten curd and a melange of spices. This creamy and spicy daal recipe is truly amazing and can be prepared on special occasions like kitty parties, picnics, and pot lucks. 350 gm urad dal
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 dashes nutmeg powder
1 teaspoon salt
4 green chilli
1 cup yoghurt (curd)
2 teaspoon dry mango powder
2 teaspoon garam masala powder
4 tablespoon fresh cream
2 inches ginger
5 tablespoon ghee
For Garnishing
1 handful coriander leaves


  • To prepare this delicious dal, soak the urad dal or the whole black lentils overnight or for 6-8 hours. Once the dal is soaked, put a pressure cook on medium flame and let it cook till soft for about 2-3 whistles.
  • Next, put a saucepan on medium flame and heat ghee in it, if you have homemade ghee that will do wonders to the dish. When the ghee is melted, add cumin seeds in it and let them splutter. Then add the fresh cream and garam masala in it. Again, if you have homemade cream, use that for preparing this dish as homemade ingredients increases the taste of the dish. Stir the cream for a few seconds and let it cook for a minute. While the cream is cooking, add yoghurt in a bowl and beat it well.
  • Add this beaten curd in the saucepan and stir in between till it leaves the sides of the pan. After this, add the dry mango powder which is also known as amchoor powder with nutmeg powder, green chillies, chopped ginger sugar and salt. Mix well all the ingredient and check the salt. If the salt is less, add more as per your taste and let the curd cook fro another minute.
  • Once the curd and cream is well cooked, pour this masala over the cooked dal and garnish with fresh coriander and a dash of cream. Enjoy this akbari dal with butter naan or roomali roti.
