Kota: A 20-year-old student allegedly committed suicide at his hostel in Landmark City area, police said on Wednesday. Police found the body hanging to a shower tap in the victim’s bathroom, after his hostel mates complained of foul smell on the night of 5 July. Deceased Nikhil Kumar, 19 is from Bihar.
Kunhadi police station house officer Ram Khiladi Meena said no suicide note was recovered from Nikhil Kumar’s hostel room but a paper was found on which he had written ‘Medical Hay..’, ‘mummy’ and ‘papa’ many times. At present, Kumar’s body has been kept in the mortuary and the police have informed his parents in Bihar.
It is strange that though Kumar’s room was locked since 4 July, but the hostel warden did not see it fit to take any action. Police checked the call records of the deceased and found that he had conversation with his mother at 1AM and 10 AM on 1 July, but had not answered any call thereafter suggesting that he committed suicide on the same day.
It may be noted that Kumar was taking coaching for AIPMT examination. A month ago, Kumar had taken admission in the Allen Institute to prepare for medical entrance exam. Kota is said to be the biggest hub of education in India,. Every year, almost 1.5 lakh students take admission in 40-odd institutions to give competitive entrance exams of medical and engineering.
This incident takes the count (number of suicides) this year to eight and taking the total the last five yuears to 60. Despite several measures by government and other NGOs, these cases have always been a matter of concern in Kota. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had earlier warned the coaching institutions to take proper care of students and provide then proper counseling.
