New Delhi: The Tripura government will repair a road near the residence of Olympian Dipa Karmakar after her family decided to return the BMW car that she was given as a gift citing poor roads and absence of a service centre in Agartala.
The BMW was gifted by Hyderabad District Badminton Association chief Chamundeswarinath. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar had presented the keys of the car to her following her heroics in Rio Olympics 2016. But Dipa has refused to accept the gift, saying it will be tough for her to maintain the luxurious car in Agartala, instead requesting that cash prize equivalent to the car’s cost be given to her so that she can use the money for her training.
According to a report in a news paper, the repairing work is likely to commence next month. “The road near Dipa’s house falls among some others that we have selected for renovation. Work is expected to begin next month,” public works department chief engineer (roads and buildings) Somesh Chandra Das said.
According to another media report, a CPI (M) Tripura unit functionary said that the gymnast had earlier requested the civic authorities to widen the road. “I was told the road (near Dipa’s house) will be revamped following her request to the mayor and Urban Development Minister in this regard,” he said. When asked about the expenses, the party leader informed that the government would spend approximately Rs.70 lakh to 80 lakh in the project.
Earlier, Dipa tweeted ‘thanking’ Tendulkar for ‘agreeing to give funds for it’. However, Chamundeswarinath said he will have a word with the gymnast on the difficulties she is facing in handling the vehicle. Dipa’s father Dulal said a technician would have to fly from Kolkata in case of any mechanical difficulty. “We have to bear the entire cost in that case,” he said, according to media report.
