3 NIFT students drown in Mahanadi River


BHUBANESWAR: On Tuesday three students of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar drowned as taking bath in river Mahanadi in Cuttack. The departed have been recognized as Srusti Pal of Kolkata, Pritam Priyadarshi of Gaziabad and Sandeep Kumar of Ranchi. In the afternoon four students supposedly went to take a bath in Gadgadia Ghat of the river.

All four went inside the water and swept away into deep water and could not come out of the strong existing as the river was in spate. Additional boy Supritee Bhatacharjee, who had a fine escape called the locals and knowledgeable police about the accident. Police officials have also further conveyed that, fire services and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) squads were busy to save the boys.

DCP, Cuttack, Sanjeev Arora has also further conveyed that, after one hour long investigation one body was fished out and afterward two boys were rescued from water in critical conditions and taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital where they were affirmed brought dead. Arora also conveyed that, near all ghats boards with warning messages have been put up discouraging people to penetrate into water.

 He has also further conveyed that, these students did not pay a heed to the signboards. We are preparation to tighten vigil around the ghats. For now, NIFT authorities refused to give any comment on the incident and said the students were not staying in the institute hostel. Director of NIFT, Monica Agrawal has also further conveyed that, the students were staying in a local mess so we cannot give any information about them. Four students of Ravenshaw University drowned in Mahanadi River previous year.
