Coimbatore. The Election commission team seized 3 containers containing nearly Rs 570 crore on Saturday morning during checking in Tirupur district on which the occupants claims it for inter-bank money transfer.
The trucks did not halt when asked to stop but officials chased them, which raised the suspicion of officials. Later personnel carrying the containers told the officials that they were transferring Rs 570 crore from Coimbatore’s State Bank of India branch to Vishakhapatnam branch but failed to show all necessary documents.
The flying squadron of the election department, along with paramilitary armed forces, apprehended the cash early in the morning during a regular vehicle check on Perumanallur-Kunnathur Bypas, police said.
When asked why they had sped away without stopping, they told the police they feared it as a robbery attempt and that they were unaware that the officials were from the election department.
However, they could not give any proper documents to confirm their claims, following which the vehicles were taken to the District Collectorate in Tirupur.
Also the bank officials of Coimbatore and Vishakhapatnam are informed.
