When scoping out destinations for an international trip, the Caribbean Sea is one of the first spots on the map to consider. The tiny islands that line the body of water boast some of the richest cultures and most beautiful beaches in the world. Luckily for me, I have the privilege of calling one of them home.
St.Lucia, also known as the Helen of the West Indies, may not always be the first island to come to mind when thinking of widely popular Caribbean destinations. But having my entire family hail from the island (and from firsthand experience), I can vouch that it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. The petite land is full of distinct culture, beaches, and attractions that you can only find within its span, making it the perfect destination for your next spontageous getaway.
I've picked out some must-do activities to add to your itinerary when you touch down. From iconic hiking trails to local culture gems, you'll want to book a trip ASAP.
Visit the Sulphur Springs.
You'll know when you're in St. Lucia once you touch down and get a strong whiff of sulfur. The distinct scent is that of the island's most historic attraction, the Sulphur Springs. The landmark is the Caribbean's only drive-in volcano and is the most active mass area in the Caribbean.
At Sulphur Springs Park, you will find a variety of bubbling hot spring water pits, steaming vents, and mud pools. Sulfur and other natural minerals flow organically through these waters, and have great healing benefits to the skin, so you'll definitely want to stay for a while and take a splash.
Crack open a fresh coconut.
A trip to St. Lucia is incomplete without sipping water from a fresh coconut. You can probably find a local vendor on every corner of the island.
