26-yr old Dalit man dies in police custody


Kanpur: The incident happened on Thursday afternoon when a 26-year-old dalit man died in police custody in Kanpur under suspicious circumstances. Looking into the matter, around twelve police personnel have been suspended from their post.

The name of the person has been identified as Kamal Valmiki who was a resident of Shiv Katra village. The man was found died at the police station while another man, Raju Mistri is missing.

After the incident, the family of Mistri was called up by the police officials to recognize the body. But later, it was identified by Kamal's family.

An FIR was filed by the family members of the victim against the station in charge and other police personnel for allegedly assaulting Kamal to death. However, police officials claimed that deceased  had committed suicide and sent the body for postmortem.

"Twelve police personnel, including the station in charge Yogendra Singh, have been suspended and strict action will be taken against them if found guilty," SSP, Mathura, Shalabh Mathur said.

When the members of Valmiki community came to know about the incident, all of them protested against the matter. Moreover, Kanpur-Lucknow highway was blocked by them. Later, senior police officials reached to the spot and controlled the situation.
