1999 Senari massacre: 10 awarded death penalty

New Delhi: A Jehanabad court on Tuesday awarded death penalty to 10 and sentenced three to life impronsment in connection with the Senari massacre, which left 34 people dead in 1999.

More than 30 villagers from upper caste Bhumihar were massacred at Senari village in Jehanabad district by the Left-wing extremists in March 1999.

A total of 70 persons were accused in the case. In January 2015, the court acquitted 24 of them.

In 1999, Ranvir Sena, an upper caste militia in Bihar shot death more than 20 Dalit men, women and children in Shankarbigha, Jehanabad.

In June 2012, Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh was killed by unidentified gunmen in Ara town while on a morning walk. He founded the militia that had been blamed for many killings, mainly the poor.

In August this year, Nand Gopal Pandey alias Fauji, the prime accused in the murder of was arrested in Bihar's Jamui district.
